Blair's Tree of Hope

On 6/22/05 The Anderson family was forever changed. Blair Erin, then 14 years old was taken to the hospital feeling worse then she had ever felt before. After a few tests, the word no family ever wants to hear was quietly spoken…..CANCER. With no time to go home, Blair and her family were sent to Children’s Hospital where many tests were done to determine the stage and type of cancer that had invaded her body. This was the beginning of a journey for one family – one family who mirrors so many others.

Blair, like so many other children, spent months and months in the hospital receiving treatments. In many cases the treatments make these kids even sicker than before they started. Their families are scared, stressed, and have no time in their days to handle the routines that they had been so use to. The basics are left undone as they spend weeks and even months at a time in the hospital. Blair lost her battle on 3/25/07 after conquering cancer on 2 separate occasions. She left behind so many wonderful memories…..and an idea….an idea to help people.

Hospital personnel with Minneapolis Children’s and the U of MN Masonic Children’s make referrals to Blair’s Tree of Hope 501c3 Non-profit for families who need assistance. Items that we provide to the families could be a Gas Cards, Target/Walmart Gift Cards, Grocery Cards, A Housecleaning, Family Photos, A Monthly Parking Permit for the parking ramps at the hospitals. Weekly we take Snacks, toiletries, Magazines, (current), craft kits and lip balm to Minneapolis Children’s and the U of MN Masonic (rotating schedule). We also provide greeting cards that parents can come in and take (Happy Birthday, holiday, etc), and packets of puzzle books and playing cards.

One unique and very popular event is our Quarterly PHOTO SHOOT. We set up at U of MN Masonic Children’s hospital and offer all of the families a chance at having fun family photo’s taken by our resident photographer and cofounder, Tom Anderson. He along with Blair’s Tree of Hope board members and volunteers provide a pizza meal and lots of props to make this a wonderful family event. Also on a quarterly basis we host a sewing event where 20+ people get together to make fun pillowcases to distribute to all the kids who are spending time in the hospital. Along with these events we also host a yearly 5K run, Yearly kickball tournament and a yearly wine tasting event. On Thanksgiving Day we serve all of the families, doctors, nurses and all other staff a homemade dinner that is catered and served by Jim Wagner of Wagners along with board members of Blair’s Tree of Hope Foundation and other volunteers!
